What is the proper breathing technique for singing?

Proper breathing for singing goes far beyond just "taking a deep breath." It involves diaphragmatic (or abdominal) breathing, which engages the body's natural breathing mechanism more efficiently and supports the voice without tension.
Diaphragmatic Breathing:
The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located at the base of your lungs. When you breathe in correctly:
- The diaphragm contracts and flattens downward, creating space in your chest cavity.
- This draws air into the lower part of the lungs, where there's greater capacity and control.
- Unlike shallow breathing (which uses upper chest and shoulders), diaphragmatic breathing expands the lower ribs, back, and belly.
